According to UN officials, at least 18 protestors have died in Myanmar due to a crackdown by security forces. Protestors took to the streets after the military overthrew the civilian government after an uneasy decade of democracy. Nobel Laureate and civilian Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained by the military and faces some charges. The UN ambassador from Myanmar pleaded for international intervention and was subsequently fired by the military government. Protestors have called for her release and the reinstatement of the civilian government, but there is no sign of respite from the military, despite sanctions and international condemnation. The military has already arrested hundreds, if not thousands of people for protesting, in an ever-increasing campaign to stop civil disobedience, and has also imposed restrictions on the Internet and many social media apps. Nevertheless, many protestors have signalled that they will “never kneel down to military boots”.
