A "Peace" of my Mind

Donald Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 2021 by a Norwegian lawmaker (Tybring-Gjedde) for his help in brokering a deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. This decision has been met with a lot of criticism and rightly so. It’s very often the media forgets that peace isn’t limited to good relations between countries; it is so much more than that. Donald Trump’s policies are racist and homophobic and are a direct reflection of his character. His words are hurtful to many communities and his tweets are racist and ignorant. Amongst calling the coronavirus the “Chinese Virus” and claiming that climate change isn’t real he’s also participated in a number of activities that aren't exactly peaceful. He’s been accused multiple times of rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment by at least 25 women since the 1970s, one of them being his then-wife Ivana. His travel policies in 2017 discriminated against Muslims and banned refugees. He earlier threatened nationwide mass raids by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), stoking fear among immigrants and stripping them of their rights. Trump words, his behaviour, his conduct, are all hypocritical and lack empathy. Peace doesn't begin with treaties and governments. It begins with humans. It begins with basic respect and decency and Trump has failed miserably in that category. He’s torn apart families and torn apart countries under the façade of peace and he will continue to do so as long as people keep encouraging him.
