Canada introduces new gun control legislation

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has introduced new gun control legislation that could allow cities to ban handguns, and increases resources allocated to stop the smuggling of guns from the United States, one of the biggest sources of illegal guns in Canada. The legislation builds on the banning of “assault-style” style weapons that took place last year following a mass shooting in Nova Scotia that killed over 20 people. A voluntary buyback program for the banned guns is also expected. However, the legislation has faced criticism from both gun rights and gun control advocates. Gun control advocates say that the measures are not strict enough - the buyback program should be mandatory, not voluntary - while gun rights advocates, including the Conservative Party, say that the measures are too strict and should focus on increasing the resources of law enforcement. The Conservative party is expected to oppose the bill, but other parties are not. Thus, the legislation will almost certainly pass and become law.
