On Tuesday, The Supreme Court of India issued a stay on the implementation of the three farm laws till further orders and decided to set up a four-member committee to resolve the deadlock between the Centre and farmers' unions.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian in a ruling on Tuesday stayed until further orders the implementation of the three laws — Farmers (Empowerment & Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, Farmers Produce Trade & Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Act and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act.
Some people favouring the implementation of the farm laws are stating that the Supreme Court has no business trying to solve this dispute, and cannot issue this stay if the laws have been passed legally. They are also criticizing the Supreme Court’s “suggestion” that the farmers simply move their protest elsewhere, instead of completely halting the protests.
The four-member committee of agricultural experts, comprising Bhupinder Singh Mann of All India Kisan Coordination Committee, Pramod Kumar Joshi, former director of International Food Policy Research Institute, agricultural economist Ashok Gulati and Anil Ghanwat, chief of Shetkari Sanghatana Maharashtra are expected to hear the concerns of the government and the union, and present its report to the court.
