India has seen yet another case where a standup comedian has been arrested for passing "indecent comments" on Hindu deities and Union Minister Amit Shah.

Munawar Faruqui, a standup comedian from Indore, Gujarat was held on Saturday, 2nd January 2021, along with four others upon a BJP MLA'S sons’ complaint. The complaint stated that upon hearing the comments, his associates and he forced the organizers to stop the program immediately.

They have been held accountable under IPC section 295-A for outraging religious feelings, and IPC section 269, for a negligent act that is likely to spread disease dangerous to life.

A person who has claimed to have attended the show says that Faruqui’s jokes weren't indecent and nor did it target any religion.

Faruqui and the four others haven't been granted bail till now, and their judicial custody is extended till the 13th of January.

After his arrest, there have been social media posts talking about Faruqui’s arrest based on his jokes and Kunal Kamra, also a stand-up comedian.

Where half the people talk about how this is unfair and how Faruqui has the right to freedom of speech, there is another half of people deliberating and debating about how this arrest is correct since one religion was targeted.
