Trump acquitted by Senate

57 Senators, including 7 Republicans, voted to impeach Donald Trump, falling short of the 67 votes required. While many Republicans in Congress, including Senate and House Minority Leaders Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy, have heavily criticised Trump, the vast majority did not vote to convict him for a plethora of reasons, such as the fact that he has already left office. Mr McConnell also suggested that Trump would be held accountable by civil lawsuits throughout the country, including his alleged attempt to overturn the election in Georgia. Trump has also faced criticism by many Republican state officials, as well as people who supported him in the past, such as Nikki Haley, who believes Trump should not be allowed to run for President again. Republicans who voted to convict Trump have faced backlash from the Republican Party.

With impeachment no longer an option, Democrats have thought of ways to prevent Trump from running from office again, such as the 14th Amendment. While it is quite ambiguous, the 14th Amendment could allow Congress to bar a person who participated in an insurrection from holding the Presidency. This would require a simple majority, which would be easy to get considering Democrats control both chambers of Congress.
